Kent Pilates Retreat

This autumn join us for the chance to delve deeper into your Pilates practice, develop your strength as well as taking the time to rest and relax as the days become shorter and we slow down into the winter. A time to stretch and relax with good food and great company.

The Location & Venue

Whitfield House is a Grade II listed Tudor manor house, with parts dating back to 1540, set within large private grounds in the heart of the Kent countryside. Reimagined by its current owners as a relaxing retreat centre, the property features a studio, sauna, swimming pool and gym, while each bedroom is tastefully furnished with its own en-suite facilities.

The surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for countryside walks straight from the door, especially in the beautiful autumn landscape, as well as nearby attractions including Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest, Sissinghurst Castle Garden and several local vineyards.

The Pilates

We are delighted that our four Pilates sessions will be led by two wonderful instructors.

Martin Bowes 

Martin is a movement artist and teacher. He has immersed himself in many different physical disciplines that inform his work as a Pilates, barre and dance teacher. He took his first Pilates class in 2020 and was so inspired by its precision and inclusivity that he trained with body control Pilates in mat and performance Pilates. Martin trained in contemporary and ballet for three years at The Place. He believes in exercise to restore the body and spirit, and he takes pride in the benefit his teaching brings. He is also a specialist in inclusion and has previously competed at national triathlon and Taekwondo competitions. You can expect Martin’s sessions to be informative but tough.

Vanessa Fagan

Vanessa has been practising Pilates and Yoga as well as general fitness for over 20 years. Her background is in classical ballet as well as gym / fitness training. She also enjoys calisthenics, martial arts, climbing, dancing and anything else that engages her body and mind. 

Her style is energetic but calm (yes, that is possible as a combination!), with a strong focus on the mind-body connection across all forms of exercise and on making exercise enjoyable and rewarding as well as challenging.

The Food

We are delighted to be joined by Upraw Foods owner Nafia for this retreat. Nafia produces nourishing vegetarian food, cooking with local produce purchased from near her home in the Cotswolds. Nafia will produce healthy two course meals as well as cake for afternoon tea and pre workshop snacks and juices.

The Rooms & Rates

The house offers a variety of flexible room options for solo guests, couples and groups of friends, with all rooms featuring en-suite facilities. Retreat prices are charged per room rather than per person, allowing you to choose between the comfort of your own room or sharing with others to help reduce costs. Solo guests who are happy to share can be paired with another guest, while friends booking together can choose the room arrangement that suits them best. Rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The Other Stuff

We will be staying in late autumn and so it is the perfect time to cosy up, there are plenty of communal spaces to rest and relax in, the lounge has a log burning stove and large sofas. If the weather is good you can sit in the covered outdoor seating area warmed by the fire pit wrapped in blankets. 

 

For those who want to be a bit more active there is an outdoor swimming pool which is not heated in November, but which can still be used for cold water swimming if you are brave enough. You might even want to dip in the lake, there is an infrared sauna and a gym which is equipped with weights, slam balls, kettle bells and mats should you want to do some extra training as part of your stay. There will be an optional creative dance practise with Martin, and we will also be having a fun afternoon workshop on day 2.

FAQ's

Does it matter if I have never done Pilates before? 

No not at all, our classes are for everyone, and you will receive plenty of individual attention and instruction. Hopefully it might encourage you to carry on after the retreat. 

 

What if I want to bring someone and they don’t want to take part in the sessions? 

That’s ok, there is plenty to do or not do at the Biddenden Retreat, from walking to cosying up inside. There is plenty of free time for everyone to do things together or apart so we are sure they will have a great time away from it all and hopefully meet some new friends too. 

 

What if I don’t want a room to myself but don’t have anyone to bring with me? 

That’s ok, if you are happy to share with someone, we will match you up with someone to share with. Retreats are a great way to meet new friends. 

 

What if I have an injury or health condition? 

We will ask you to fill in some forms in advance and we will help you to modify in the sessions as much as possible should you need to.

 

What if I don’t want to take part in all the sessions? 

That’s ok, this is your retreat so if you want to rest and take time for yourself then that’s fine. We just ask that you let us know in advance of each session so that we are not waiting for you. 

 

Is the retreat just for women? 

Absolutely not, we have plenty of men who practise Pilates in our classes at Spin and Workout. This is a retreat for everyone no matter what age or sex. 

 

How to get there.

Whitfield House is well located if you are travelling by car, with easy access to the A21 or M20. If you choose to come by train Headcorn is 4.8 miles away and 11 miles to Ashford international. We can assist with taxis or car sharing where possible.
